the discourse of the rocking horse

1. For it does not tip over easily! O monks, be like the rocking horse, and do not tip over into heterodoxy or lassitude.

2. For it is gaily painted and delights the young and old! O monks, be like the rocking horse, and bring joy and delight to all.

3. For it soothes the ills of bad humor, calming fretful minds! O monks, be like the rocking horse, and calm the afflictions of self and beings.

4. For it is always ready and willing to rock back and forth, and does not begrudge its time! O monks, be like the rocking horse, generous with all things.

5. For it does not accept and reject its riders, saying this one is good and that one is bad! O monks, be like the rocking horse, free from discrimination.

6. For it keeps silent, responding to neither abusive speech or sweet speech! O monks, be like the rocking horse, cultivating patience and unattachment to worldly views.

For all those with a rocking horse in his or her life…
